Challenges and Solutions for Industrial Fan SKD Packing in the Retail Market

Table of Contents

Packing industrial fans is a challenging task that requires careful coordination of volume and cost.

The packing volume for industrial fans is generally larger, and the industrial fan grill occupies more space. As a result, industrial fans are primarily packaged in SKD.

How to Pack the SKD Parts

The most favored packaging method includes:

  • 1 motor per carton box,
  • 2 sets of fan grill and fan blades per carton box,
  • 1 fan base per carton box,
  • For the stand fans, 5 support rods per carton box,
  • For the wall fans, 10 sets of hanging wall poles per carton box.

There are also preferences for 10 support rods per carton box, or 2 motors per carton box, which do not significantly impact the packaging.

This packaging method maximizes the use of area to save transportation costs for both parties as much as possible.

However, this SKD packing is inconvenient for the retail market, as distributing the parts into different cartons is challenging.

For example, when selling individual units, it requires opening multiple cartons to assemble a single fan, which is not practical for customers or easy for transportation.

Example of a 10 pcs industrial stand fan packing breakdown:

  • 10 motors in 10 cartons,
  • 10 fan grills and fan blades in 5 cartons,
  • 10 support rods in 1 carton,
  • 10 bases in 10 cartons.

If a customer buys 1 piece, the carton quantity reminder is as follows:

  • 9 motors in 9 cartons,
  • 9 fan grills & fan blades in 5 cartons,
  • 9 support rods in 1 carton,
  • 9 bases in 9 cartons.

As a result, the seller would be unable to provide customers with carton packaging for individual sets of fan grills & blades and for single support rods.

If a customer buys 2 pieces, the carton quantity reminder is as follows:

  • 8 motors in 8 cartons,
  • 8 fan grills & fan blades in 4 cartons,
  • 8 support rods in 1 carton,
  • 8 bases in 8 cartons.

Similarly, the seller would also be unable to provide customers with carton packaging for two support rods.

Or, you could try selling 10 sets of industrial fans to a customer, but it is not an easy job in the retail market.

Therefore, this type of SKD packing presents an inconvenience for the retail market, requiring some distributors to incur significant costs to repackage the items.

Solution

After much discussion and testing, we have tried packing 1 complete set in one carton.

A single set packing of industrial fans allows all parts to be seen immediately upon opening the box, which is convenient for both the e-commerce and retail markets.

Customers (distributors) do not need to search for spare parts in different cartons.

Compared to SKD packing, the single package also has its shortcomings, such as the packing volume being double that of SKD packing, which can lead to high sea freight costs.

Additionally, the cost for the master outer box is 2~3 times higher than SKD packing.

Balancing the increased costs with the convenience it brings to the end market is always our goal.
