Plug and Voltage Requirements for Exporting Electric Fans: A Market-by-Market Guide

Electric fans are sold in almost every country. But the same fan model cannot always use the same plug in every market. Different countries use different plugs, voltages, frequencies and safety rules. The fact that a plug fits into a socket does not mean the fan is safe, and it does not mean the product can be sold legally.
This article explains the main requirements in simple language, covering the main markets in Europe, the Americas, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Oceania. The content also refers to official sources in English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Japanese and Chinese.
Research note: Regulations and standard versions can change. Before mass production or shipment, confirm the latest requirements with your local importer and test laboratory.
Why Plug Requirements Matter for Electric Fans
An electric fan usually includes a motor, a power cord, and sometimes an electronic control board. Every part must suit the local power supply system. The plug must also comply with local safety rules.
Four Things You Must Check

A travel adapter only changes the plug shape. It does not change voltage or frequency, and it may not meet local safety rules. For this reason, a travel adapter should never be the normal solution for a retail electric fan.
Basic Electrical Terms
Voltage and Frequency
Voltage is the electrical pressure in the power system. Common voltages include 100 V, 110 V, 120 V, 127 V, 220 V, 230 V and 240 V.
Frequency is the number of times the current changes direction per second, measured in hertz (Hz). Most countries use 50 Hz or 60 Hz.
The rating label must show the fan’s true rated values. Common examples:
- 120 V~ 60 Hz — for the United States and Canada
- 220–240 V~ 50 Hz — for many European and Asian markets
- 100 V~ 50/60 Hz — for Japan, but only if the fan can be used in both Japanese frequency zones
- 100–240 V~ 50/60 Hz — only if every electrical part really supports this range
Do not print a very wide voltage or frequency range just for marketing. The design and the test results must support the declared values.
Class I and Class II Fans
The safety class affects the plug and cord design.

Class II fans normally carry the double-square symbol. Class I fans need a reliable earth connection from the plug to every part that must be earthed.
Europe
Most of Europe uses 230 V and 50 Hz. But not every country uses exactly the same plug system.
EU Markets
Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Portugal commonly use Type C, E or F plugs and sockets. Italy also commonly uses the Type L plug.
Germany

If the current and the product design stay within the plug limits, a small Class II fan can use a Type C Europlug. Class I fans need protective earthing. In many EU markets, a CEE 7/7 plug works with both Type E and Type F sockets.
An electric fan may need to comply with the following EU rules:
- Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU
- EMC Directive 2014/30/EU
- RoHS Directive
- EN/IEC 60335-1 and the relevant part for fans
- Additional regulations if the product has wireless functions, batteries or energy-related features
The CE mark is not a general quality mark. It shows that the manufacturer declares the product complies with the applicable EU rules. The manufacturer must keep a technical file and sign an EU Declaration of Conformity.
United Kingdom and Ireland
The UK and Ireland use the Type G plug system. The supply is normally 230 V, 50 Hz.
This plug has three rectangular pins, usually contains a fuse, and works with sockets that have protective shutters. For small fans, a 3 A fuse is common. But the fuse must match the cord and the product design.
United Kingdom

- Key requirement: Use an approved fused plug. Do not ship loose European-plug adapters.
- Certification route: UK electrical safety regulations; UKCA or CE mark depending on placing-on-market date and current rules
Ireland
- Plug standard: IS 401 / BS 1363 family
- Key requirement: Use a fused Type G cord set and confirm local Irish rules
- Certification route: CE and Irish safety rules
Switzerland and Turkey
Switzerland uses the Type J plug. It is different from the earthed plugs used in Germany and France. A suitable two-pin Europlug fits some Swiss sockets, but an earthed fan needs a Swiss plug.
Turkey normally uses Type C and Type F plugs, with a 230 V, 50 Hz supply. Products usually need to follow CE, EN and Turkish safety rules.
North America
The United States and Canada normally use 120 V, 60 Hz. Mexico uses similar plug shapes, but the nominal voltage is usually 127 V.
United States and Canada
The Type A plug has two flat pins. The Type B plug adds an earth pin. Two-pin fan plugs may also be polarized, meaning one blade is wider than the other, so the plug can only be inserted one way.
United States

Canada
- Common plugs: A, B; CSA/NEMA system

- Main safety route: CSA, cUL or another recognized Canadian certification route
Class II fans normally use a polarized two-pin plug. Class I fans normally use a three-pin earthed plug. The cord needs the correct wire size, strain relief, temperature rating and flame rating.
Many US retailers require certification by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL). Local inspectors may ask for the same. Fans with digital electronics may also need to meet FCC Part 15 requirements.
Mexico
Mexico
- Common plugs: A, B
- Supply: 127 V, 60 Hz
- Key requirement: Products designed only for 120 V need engineering confirmation before entering Mexico
- Certification route: NOM certification; NOM-003-SCFI is one common safety framework for electrical products. The exact route depends on the product category and current Mexican rules. ANCE and NYCE are common certification bodies in this system.
Central and South America
This region uses several plug systems. Voltages can also differ between countries. In Brazil, the voltage can even differ between regions inside the same country.

Brazil Needs Special Attention
Brazil uses the Type N plug defined in ABNT NBR 14136. Common plug ratings are 10 A and 20 A, and their pin sizes are different. Most electric fans draw low current, but the correct plug rating still has to be confirmed.
Brazil has both 127 V and 220 V supplies. So seeing a Brazilian plug does not tell you which voltage the fan needs. The rating label, the packaging and the sales page must clearly show the correct voltage.
Spanish-Speaking Markets
Latin America has no single electrical regulation system. Chile uses SEC certification, Colombia uses RETIE, Mexico uses NOM, and Argentina has its own IRAM system. So one “Spanish-market SKU” is usually not enough.
Spanish manuals can share the same base content. But the plug, the rating label, the certificates, the importer information and the legal warnings may still be different.
East Asia and South Asia
Asia has some of the largest electric fan markets in the world. At the same time, voltage, frequency and national certification differ a lot between countries.
Mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, Japan and Korea

Japan

South Korea

Mainland China and Hong Kong cannot simply share one plug SKU. Mainland China mainly follows the Chinese GB plug standard. Hong Kong uses the Type G plug, close to the UK system.
Japan has two supply frequencies. Eastern Japan mainly uses 50 Hz and western Japan mainly uses 60 Hz. A fan sold across the whole of Japan should support both frequencies. This is very important for motors whose operation depends on supply frequency.
Korea uses 220 V, 50–60 Hz, and Type F plugs are common. An EU cord set may look similar, but the finished fan and the cord still have to meet Korean certification requirements.
India
India

- Key plug requirement: Small fans may use a 6 A plug; higher-current products may need a larger plug rating

Singapore and Malaysia both use Type G plugs, but their certification systems are different. Thailand and the Philippines have several socket types. That does not mean any plug is acceptable. The final plug must match the product certificate and the local sales rules.
The Philippines needs special attention because it uses 220 V, 60 Hz. A fan built for the US market may have the right plug shape but the wrong voltage. A fan built for Europe may have a close voltage but a different plug and a different frequency design.
Australia and New Zealand
Australia and New Zealand use the Type I plug defined in AS/NZS 3112. The supply is normally 230 V, 50 Hz. The plug has angled flat pins. The Class I version also has an earth pin.

Australia and New Zealand share many standards. But the importer should still confirm registration and product requirements for each country separately.
Middle East
Several Gulf countries use the Type G plug.
Saudi Arabia

- Main certification route: SASO, SABER and GSO rules
United Arab Emirates
- Common plugs: C, D, G
- Supply: 220 V, 50 Hz

Saudi Arabia and the UAE often use the same plug shape. But Saudi Arabia uses 60 Hz and the UAE uses 50 Hz. The motor and the control board must support the frequency of the target market.
Africa
Africa is a large and fast-growing market for electric fans, because many countries have hot climates and a strong demand for low-cost cooling. Almost all African markets use 50 Hz, which makes motor design simpler than in the Americas. The main difficulties are different plug systems, mixed old and new sockets, unstable grid voltage, and pre-shipment inspection programmes.
Three points apply to most African markets:
- Pre-export inspection is common. Many countries use a PVoC (Pre-Export Verification of Conformity) or CBCA-type programme. Goods are checked before shipment, and a certificate is needed for customs clearance.
- Language matters. North, West and Central African markets often require French or Arabic; Angola and Mozambique require Portuguese.
- Voltage stability is a design issue. Voltage drops and surges are common in several markets. Motor thermal protection and a realistic voltage tolerance are important for warranty cost.
North Africa
Egypt

Country compliance work should start at the design stage, not after the fan has been produced.

Cord and Plug Inspection
The factory cannot check pin shape only. It should also control:
- Plug body standard and approval number
- Rated current and voltage
- Fuse type and rating, where required
- Wire size and number of conductors
- Cord temperature rating
- Cord flame rating
- Plug polarity
- Earth connection
- Cord anchorage and strain relief
- Flexing test and pull test results
- Supplier certificates and production batch records
Rating Label and Manual Inspection
The rating label should be easy to read and firmly attached to the product. The label information must match the certificates and test reports. The label may need to show:
- Model number
- Rated voltage and frequency
- Rated power or current
- Manufacturer or responsible company
- Safety class symbol
- Local certification marks
- Production code or traceability code
- Required warning text
The manual should use the language required by the target market. It should cover safe cleaning, guard installation, what to do with a damaged cord, child safety, and whether the product is suitable for indoor or outdoor use.
Common Compliance Mistakes
Using One Plug for Too Many Countries
The Type G plug can be used in the UK, Ireland, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, the UAE, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. But a certificate from one country does not mean another country accepts it.
Each market may have its own plug approval, product registration, labelling, importer and manual requirements.
Treating an Adapter as Part of the Product
An adapter can create the following risks:
- A loose contact can cause heating.
- The adapter can break the earth path.
- The live and neutral positions can change.
- The required fuse may be missing.
- The adapter can block the socket shutter.
- The adapter may not be approved in the target country.
Checking Voltage but Not Frequency
Fan motors can be affected by a change in frequency. A frequency change can change the speed, and can also raise motor temperature or increase noise.
If the label declares both 50 Hz and 60 Hz, the motor supplier should provide written data for both 50 Hz and 60 Hz.
Copying Certification Marks
Marks such as CCC, PSE, KC, RCM and INMETRO all have their own usage rules. A factory cannot print a mark on a new product just because a similar model has it.
The product itself, the components, the production site and the certificate must all support that mark.
Multi-Language Research Sources
Material from official bodies and standards organizations is usually more reliable than travel websites. Travel websites can show common plug shapes, but they normally do not explain full product safety and market access requirements.
